Madras High Court Dismisses Tamannaah Bhatia’s ₹1 Crore Claim Against Brand
The court dismisses actor’s appeal over alleged unauthorized image use
The Madras High Court on Thursday dismissed an appeal filed by actor Tamannaah Bhatia in a case related to an alleged misuse of her images by a commercial brand. The court upheld an earlier single-judge order that had rejected her plea seeking ₹1 crore in damages from Power Soaps, bringing the legal dispute to a setback for the actor at the appellate stage.
Tamannaah had approached the court alleging that the company continued to use her photographs for promotional purposes even after the expiry of their endorsement contract. She argued that the continued usage was unauthorised and sought compensation for what she described as a violation of her publicity and contractual rights. The case had drawn attention as part of a growing number of disputes involving celebrity endorsements and brand agreements.
However, the single-judge bench had previously rejected her claim, prompting her to file an appeal before the division bench of the High Court. The appellate court, after reviewing the arguments, chose to uphold the earlier decision, effectively siding with the brand and dismissing the ₹1 crore compensation demand.

The ruling highlights the legal complexities surrounding endorsement contracts, particularly regarding the duration of image usage rights after agreements expire. It also underscores the importance of clearly defined contractual terms in celebrity-brand partnerships, as courts continue to interpret such disputes based on evidence of consent, usage rights, and contractual obligations.
