Kamal Haasan Calls For Cost Correction in Indian Film Industry Today

Kamal Haasan urges Indian cinema to cut costs without affecting worker wages.

Veteran Actor and Filmmaker Kamal Haasan has called for a major rethink of spending patterns in Indian cinema, urging the film industry to adopt more disciplined and sustainable production practices amid rising economic pressures. In an open letter shared on social media platform X on May 15, Haasan questioned the growing culture of extravagance in filmmaking, particularly the increasing dependence on expensive overseas shoots and large-scale production budgets. His remarks quickly triggered widespread discussion across the entertainment industry and among film audiences online.

In the strongly worded letter, Haasan questioned why filmmakers continue to rely heavily on foreign locations for romantic sequences and big-budget productions. “Why must every love story bloom only in Paris, and every honeymoon end in Switzerland?” he wrote, adding that “romance, fortunately, does not require foreign exchange.” The actor linked the ongoing global economic uncertainty and the impact of the West Asia crisis on fuel, logistics, and energy costs to the urgent need for what he described as “cost correction” in Indian cinema. He argued that the industry must rethink its obsession with scale and visual excess in order to remain financially sustainable.

At the same time, Kamal Haasan stressed that any effort to reduce production costs should not affect the welfare of workers and laborers associated with the film industry. He stated that financial correction must never come at the cost of wages, safety, accommodation, food, transport, or humane working conditions for crew members. According to Haasan, those who contribute the most physically demanding work on film sets should not suffer because of poor financial planning or avoidable extravagance at the top level of production.

The actor also criticized what he described as bloated entourage culture, production delays, and unnecessary spending habits that have become increasingly common in mainstream filmmaking. Haasan argued that the core issue facing cinema today is not labor expenditure but wasteful practices that inflate budgets without necessarily improving storytelling quality. He said Indian cinema should place greater confidence in domestic production ecosystems and local locations rather than assuming cinematic grandeur can only be achieved through costly international schedules and large-scale spectacles.

Referring to the history of Indian filmmaking, Haasan said some of the country’s most celebrated films were created through discipline, conviction, and creative clarity rather than excess spending. He urged filmmakers, producers, and actors to prioritize content and efficient production management over visual extravagance. The actor also called for a wider industry-level discussion involving producers, actors, unions, exhibitors, OTT platforms, financiers, and guilds to collectively address the growing financial pressures currently affecting the entertainment business.

Haasan’s comments come at a time when film industries across India continue to face rising production costs, inconsistent theatrical revenues, and changing audience viewing habits following the rapid expansion of streaming platforms. Several recent big-budget films have struggled commercially despite high-profile casts and expensive promotional campaigns, increasing concerns about long-term sustainability in the sector. Concluding his appeal, Kamal Haasan urged senior industry figures, including himself, to lead by example and adopt responsible production practices, stating that protecting cinema’s economics today would help secure its future tomorrow.
