Jason Sanjay Opens Up About His First Call After Joining Sigma

Jason Sanjay, son of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay, opened up about his filmmaking journey and his directorial debut Sigma at the film’s pre-release event in Salem on Tuesday evening. The 26-year-old filmmaker discussed his experience of working on his first feature, the nervousness he felt on the first day of shooting and the people who supported him throughout the process.

Jason recalled feeling extremely nervous when the cameras began rolling on the first day of Sigma. However, he noted that the anxiety eased after the first take as he became more focused on the work. He encouraged aspiring first-time directors to keep working despite nervousness, stressing that the process becomes enjoyable once they become involved in the craft. He also described the completion of the film as a moment filled with both satisfaction and sadness.

Reflecting on what he learnt while making Sigma, Jason advised aspiring filmmakers to make plenty of short films and develop their writing skills through regular practice. He also highlighted patience as an important quality once an opportunity arrives, pointing out that filmmakers cannot control every circumstance during a shoot. According to Jason, directors need to remain adaptable and find ways to execute their vision despite challenges that may arise while filming.

Jason also spoke about his personality and early connection with cinema. He described himself as “cool and composed” and noted that he does not usually express his emotions externally. He recalled watching his first film in a theatre at the age of three, when he watched Thirumalai, which starred his father Vijay and Jyotika. However, he identified the Brazilian crime drama City of God as the film that made him seriously consider becoming a director.

Before taking up Sigma, Jason had already begun exploring filmmaking and made his first short film, Pull The Trigger, in 2022. He also recalled that Thamilkumaran was the first person to watch Sigma. When asked who he called first after signing to direct the film, Jason revealed that he called his mother, Sankgeetha Sornalingam. He also described members of the Sigma team using individual words, calling Faria “energetic”, Thaman “BGM”, Sundeep “confident” and Subaskaran a “mentor”.

With Sigma, Jason has taken an important step into feature filmmaking while acknowledging the support he received from those around him. At the event, he thanked Lyca management, his uncle Sanjeev and his family for their backing. Meanwhile, reports and speculation about a possible acting debut for Vijay’s son have also continued, although the focus at the Salem event remained on his first film as a director.
