Jana Nayagan Producers End Court Battle, Settle Film Certification Dispute with CBFC

Jana Nayagan producers withdraw Madras High Court petition against CBFC after court setbacks.

KVN Productions, the producers of actor-politician Vijay’s highly anticipated film Jana Nayagan, on Tuesday moved the Madras High Court to withdraw their writ petition against the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). This step marks the conclusion of a prolonged legal battle following setbacks in both the High Court and the Supreme Court.

The producers, through counsel Vijayan Subramanian, informed the Court that they now prefer to resolve the certification issue directly with the CBFC, rather than pursuing further legal recourse. The matter was listed ‘for withdrawal’ before Justice PT Asha, signaling a potential shift to administrative resolution.

Jana Nayagan, touted as Vijay’s last movie, was initially scheduled for release on January 9, 2026. However, delays in CBFC certification prompted the producers to approach the High Court seeking issuance of UA certification based on communication from the Board dated December 24, 2025.

The case witnessed multiple legal twists: Justice Asha initially directed certification after clarifying that the CBFC chairman’s powers end once the examining committee clears a film. However, the Board appealed to the Supreme Court, which granted an interim stay, and subsequent proceedings sent the matter back to the High Court for fresh hearing.

Despite efforts to expedite clearance, including a bid to overturn the Supreme Court stay, KVN Productions faced repeated delays and challenges. The High Court’s division bench later set aside the single judge’s order and requested a counter-affidavit from the CBFC, prolonging the legal process.

By opting to withdraw the writ petition, KVN Productions effectively ends the court fight and may now pursue resolution through administrative channels with the CBFC. Industry experts say this move could pave the way for a smoother release of the film while avoiding further judicial entanglement.
