Court Ends Censor Row, Paves Way for Jana Nayagan Theatrical Release

The Madras High Court on Thursday delivered a favorable verdict for the makers of Jana Nayagan, directing the Central Board of Film Certification to grant a U/A 16+ certificate to the highly anticipated Vijay-starrer. Justice PT Asha, presiding over the case, resolved a significant impasse that had forced an abrupt postponement of the film's scheduled release, paving the way for its eventual arrival in theaters.
In her detailed order, Justice Asha criticized the objections raised by a CBFC member as appearing to be an afterthought, warning that upholding such complaints could establish a perilous precedent in the certification process. The judge emphasized the importance of maintaining consistency and accountability within the board to prevent arbitrary delays that disrupt planned theatrical releases.
The crisis emerged when the CBFC withheld the certification due to specific concerns flagged by one member, prompting the producers to approach the court urgently. Despite advance bookings already underway across domestic and international markets, the last-minute hold-up compelled distributors to cancel numerous shows, leading to substantial financial repercussions estimated in several crores, particularly in overseas territories.

With the legal hurdle now cleared, industry sources indicate that Jana Nayagan may secure a release either in the immediate coming days or during the auspicious Pongal festival window commencing January 14.
