Tribute to 50 Years of Thalaiva! Secret Behind Coolie's Release Date
Superstar Rajinikanth's upcoming film Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, is one of the most anticipated releases of 2025.
Superstar-starrer Coolie is set to hit theatres worldwide on August 14, 2025, strategically timed to coincide with India's Independence Day week. This release also marks the 50th anniversary of Rajinikanth's illustrious acting career. It's on august 15, 1975 that his first Tamil movie Apoorva Ragangal, directed by K Balachander, hit the screens in Tamil Nadu.
Sharing a new poster featuring Rajinikanth, the makers officially announced the release date of Coolie this evening .
The film is touted as an action-packed thriller, centred around the dark world of gold smuggling. Lokesh Kanagaraj has confirmed that Coolie will be a standalone film, not part of his Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU), which includes hits like Vikram and Kaithi.
Rajinikanth leads the ensemble cast, portraying a rugged and intense character, as seen in the recently released poster. The poster showcases Rajinikanth in a gritty avatar, with bloodied hands and a fierce expression, hinting at high-octane action.
The film features stars from multiple industries, including Nagarjuna, Upendra, Soubin Shahir, Sathyaraj, and Shruti Haasan. Bollywood actor Aamir Khan is also rumoured to make a cameo appearance. The film reunites Rajinikanth and Sathyaraj after 38 years, their last collaboration being Mr. Bharath in 1986.
The music is by Anirudh Ravichander, and his previous works for Rajini starrers are mega hits (Petta, Jailer). Coolie's cinematography is handled by Girish Gangadharan, with editing by Philomin Raj.
While Coolie is expected to dominate the Tamil box office, it faces competition in the Hindi belt and Telugu states due to the possible simultaneous release of War 2, starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr. NTR.
Coolie is Rajinikanth's 171st film. After this, he will get down to work on Nelson's Jailer 2.
