Actors, filmmakers and political leaders from across the country paid heartfelt tributes to legendary playback singer S. Janaki, who passed away in Mysuru on Saturday after suffering a cardiac arrest. She was 88. Widely regarded as one of India's greatest singers, S. Janaki left behind a remarkable musical legacy spanning more than six decades and over 48,000 songs in more than 20 languages. Her death has prompted an outpouring of grief from the Indian film fraternity and millions of admirers across the country.

Among those paying tribute was Telugu megastar Chiranjeevi, who said the news of Janaki's passing had deeply shaken him. Recalling her immense contribution to his films, he said her unmatched voice brought life to countless memorable songs and emotions portrayed on screen. Chiranjeevi described her as not just a singer but an extraordinary artist who transformed emotions into timeless melodies. He said her songs would continue to inspire generations and remain an inseparable part of people's lives while extending condolences to her family and admirers.

Actor, producer and parliamentarian Kamal Haasan also mourned the legendary singer's demise through an emotional message on social media. In his tribute, he said her songs would continue to echo forever, while expressing grief over the irreplaceable loss felt by countless music lovers. Producer Boney Kapoor described S. Janaki as the "Nightingale of South India" and said the voice that gave life to countless emotions may have fallen silent, but its echo would continue to resonate for generations.

Kapoor said S. Janaki's songs transcended languages, generations and geographical boundaries, making her one of India's greatest musical treasures. He noted that for more than six decades, she touched millions of hearts through songs that beautifully expressed love, joy, devotion, longing and sorrow. Offering his condolences to her family and admirers, he said her extraordinary artistry had enriched the lives of millions and would continue to remain an integral part of India's musical heritage.

According to Apollo BGS Hospitals in Mysuru, S. Janaki was admitted to the hospital on July 11 after her health deteriorated. The hospital said she was brought in at 12:49 pm and was placed under intensive medical care with continuous monitoring by a multidisciplinary team. Despite sustained treatment efforts, she suffered a cardiac arrest during the course of treatment and was declared dead at 7:30 pm on Saturday, bringing to an end one of the most celebrated careers in Indian music.

Born on April 23, 1938, S. Janaki built an unparalleled career that earned her numerous national and state honours, including the Padma Bhushan. Her distinctive voice became synonymous with some of Indian cinema's most iconic songs across multiple languages, making her one of the country's most celebrated playback singers. Her passing marks the end of an extraordinary era in Indian music, but her timeless recordings and unmatched contribution to the industry will continue to inspire generations of musicians and listeners.
