CBFC Approves Vijay’s 'Jana Nayagan' With Cuts and Scene Replacements
CBFC clears Vijay’s film after edits and scene changes.
The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has cleared Thalapathy Vijay’s much-anticipated film Jana Nayagan for release after ordering multiple edits, including the deletion of seven scenes and replacement of three others. The film, directed by H. Vinoth and produced by KVN Productions, has a final runtime of 180 minutes following the mandated changes. The certification, issued on July 3, 2026, marks a key step toward the film’s theatrical release after months of regulatory delays and legal proceedings.
According to certification details accessed from official records, the CBFC directed the makers to implement a range of modifications before granting approval. These include muting several expletives, correcting tobacco disclaimers, and inserting an eight-second narcotics warning in Tamil and English at the beginning of the film. The board also instructed the filmmakers to reduce the duration of violent sequences, including scenes involving killings, bloodshed, and stabbing visuals, to ensure compliance with screening guidelines.
Further edits mandated by the CBFC include removing or altering specific graphic visuals, such as a “cut ear” sequence, flying teeth in a fight scene, and a flying ankle shot in an explosion sequence. The certification also required adjustments to on-screen text, including adding Tamil translations alongside place names and removing branding references such as the word “Classic” from a cigarette label. In addition, one dialogue was muted and certain slow-motion fight shots were modified to reduce intensity.

As per the certificate, the total deletions amount to approximately 43 seconds of footage, while around 18 seconds were replaced. The board also instructed the production team to submit rights documentation for copyrighted songs used in the film. Despite the changes, the final certification allows the film to retain its 180-minute runtime. The revisions are part of the CBFC’s standard compliance process under its advisory guidelines.
The film had faced a prolonged and complex certification journey, initially receiving clearance from the examining committee in December 2025 before being referred to a revising panel following objections raised within the board. The makers subsequently approached the Madras High Court and later the Supreme Court over delays, while reports also suggested procedural complications related to the Model Code of Conduct. The film, which stars Vijay in the lead role alongside Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, and Mamitha Baiju, has generated strong public interest, especially amid speculation surrounding the actor’s political journey and its influence on the film’s narrative reception.
