Mersal returns to theatres ahead of Vijay’s birthday.
Tamil actor-turned-politician Vijay’s 2017 blockbuster Mersal is set to return to theatres in a special re-release ahead of his 52nd birthday, generating excitement among fans across Tamil Nadu. The film, directed by Atlee and produced by Thenandal Studios, will be screened again as part of birthday celebrations, with its theatrical run scheduled to begin on June 19.
The re-release has been planned in connection with Vijay’s birthday on June 22, which falls on a Monday this year. As a result, the film will be brought to cinemas a few days earlier, offering fans a weekend viewing opportunity. According to distributors, Mersal will be released across approximately 100 theatres spanning Chennai, Chengalpet, Kanchipuram, and Tiruvallur districts, marking a wide regional rollout.
The initiative is being led by K Kennady on behalf of KP Priyanka Production, with promotional support highlighting the actor’s enduring popularity. The film’s re-release adds to a growing trend of revisiting Vijay’s earlier hits in theatres and on television, reflecting sustained audience interest in his filmography even after his transition into politics.

Mersal is an action-thriller in which Vijay plays a triple role—a magician, a doctor, and the doctor’s father. The storyline explores themes of corruption in the medical industry while blending action, drama, comedy, and social commentary. The film also carries strong messages on justice, family values and standing up for the underprivileged, elements that contributed to its wide audience appeal.
The film features performances by Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Kajal Aggarwal and Nithya Menen in key roles, while the music was composed by A. R. Rahman. Cinematography was handled by G. K. Vishnu and editing by Ruben. Upon its original release, the film received mixed critical reviews but was widely appreciated by fans, particularly for Vijay’s performance across three distinct characters.
Directed by Atlee, Mersal marked the second collaboration between the filmmaker and Vijay after Theri. Industry observers often credit the film for effectively showcasing Vijay’s mass appeal through impactful dialogues, stylised action sequences and emotional storytelling. The upcoming re-release is expected to draw strong fan turnout, reinforcing the film’s status as one of Vijay’s most popular commercial successes.
