Karuppu Morning Shows Cancelled Despite Early Clearance By Authorities

Karuppu 9 AM shows were cancelled days after receiving initial permission.

In a major last-minute development ahead of its theatrical release, the 9 AM first-day screenings of the much-anticipated Tamil film Karuppu, starring Trisha Krishnan and Suriya, have been cancelled. The decision, announced just hours before the scheduled shows, was attributed to “unavoidable reasons,” according to producer SR Prabhu, leaving fans disappointed and awaiting clarity on revised screening timings.

The cancellation comes shortly after the film’s production team had publicly confirmed special permission from Tamil Nadu’s newly elected Chief Minister Vijay for early morning screenings. The approval had initially allowed Karuppu to hold 9 AM first-day-first-show (FDFS) screenings, along with permission for up to five shows per day during the first two days of its release window. The announcement had generated significant excitement among fans eager to participate in traditional early-morning celebrations associated with major Tamil film releases.

However, the sudden withdrawal of the 9 AM shows has now shifted attention to the uncertainty surrounding the release logistics. Producer SR Prabhu informed audiences through a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating that the early screenings would no longer take place and apologising for the inconvenience caused. The statement did not provide further details on whether the cancellation was due to administrative, logistical, or regulatory reasons.

In Tamil Nadu, early morning film screenings have often been a sensitive issue, especially during big-budget releases featuring leading stars. While FDFS culture is deeply rooted in the state’s cinema tradition, authorities have periodically imposed restrictions on early shows due to concerns over crowd control, public safety, and potential law-and-order challenges outside theatres. As a result, special permissions for 9 AM screenings are rare and typically subject to last-minute adjustments based on local conditions.

Earlier, the Karuppu team had expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Vijay for granting approval for the early screenings, sharing an official post on X along with an image of the Chief Minister at work. The post had confirmed that FDFS celebrations would begin at 9 AM, heightening anticipation among fans and industry observers alike. The reversal of that arrangement has therefore come as an unexpected setback for the film’s promotional momentum.

Following the cancellation, social media platforms saw a wave of reactions from fans, many expressing frustration over the abrupt change in schedule. Some users urged the makers to better coordinate release logistics in the future, while others voiced disappointment over what they described as disrupted expectations around the traditional FDFS experience. Despite the backlash, there has been no additional official clarification from the film’s production team regarding alternative screening arrangements or a revised timetable.

As things stand, Karuppu is expected to proceed with its release as planned, albeit without the earlier scheduled 9 AM shows. Fans are now awaiting further updates from the makers regarding theatre timings and whether any compensatory screening adjustments will be introduced to accommodate the high demand surrounding the film’s opening day.
