Abhishek Banerjee Compares Mirzapur Violence Debate With Sholay, Animal And Dhurandhar

Abhishek Banerjee is set to reprise his popular character Compounder in Mirzapur: The Movie, bringing the actor back to the franchise ahead of its theatrical release on September 4. In the run-up to the film, Abhishek addressed one of the most debated aspects of the Mirzapur series — its depiction of violence, strong language and a fictional world shaped by crime and conflict.

The actor pushed back against criticism that violent content on screen could encourage violence in society. Abhishek argued that cinema and shows often draw from realities that already exist, rather than creating such behaviour. He pointed to the scale of violence in the real world while explaining why filmmakers attempt to portray fictional worlds with a degree of honesty.

Abhishek also compared the criticism surrounding Mirzapur with discussions that followed films such as Sholay, Animal and Dhurandhar. He highlighted that these projects also faced scrutiny over their portrayal of violence. In his view, Mirzapur presents fictional characters and situations, while audiences are capable of distinguishing between entertainment and real-life behaviour.

Speaking with The Free Press Journal, Abhishek explained that reactions to films and shows remain subjective and depend on individual viewers. He maintained that violence in cinema is more often a reflection of society than a cause of violent behaviour, adding that filmmakers attempt to depict the realities that inspire their stories rather than present them as a blueprint for real life.

The actor also revealed that bringing Mirzapur to theatres required the makers to work within tighter content restrictions than those associated with the OTT series. The team was aware from the outset that the theatrical version would not have the same creative freedom, leading them to reduce abusive language in several sequences and make other changes to the content while adapting the franchise for the big screen.

Despite these changes, Abhishek believes the reunion of familiar characters will remain a major attraction for audiences. Mirzapur: The Movie features Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Divyenndu, Jitendra Kumar and Ravi Kishan alongside Abhishek. The film is scheduled to release in theatres on September 4.
