Zoya Akhtar Gives Fresh Update on Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara Sequel
Zoya Akhtar shares update on long-awaited Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara sequel.
Zoya Akhtar has confirmed that work on Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara 2 is underway, but said the sequel will move forward only when the story feels right. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter India at the Monsoon Film Festival, the filmmaker said the team is exploring how to revisit the much-loved characters in a way that connects with their lives today. “We are on it,” Zoya said, while adding that she would make an official announcement once the project reaches the right stage.
The filmmaker’s comments offer one of the clearest updates yet on the long-awaited sequel to the 2011 film. Zoya explained that there is still uncertainty about what the final project will look like, particularly whether the team will reach a point where revisiting the characters feels appropriate. She indicated that the priority is to develop a story that can naturally continue their journeys rather than making a sequel simply because of audience demand. Fans have been waiting for years to see the central trio return.
Zoya also recalled the strong reaction to an advertisement featuring Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar and Abhay Deol in 2025. The appearance brought the three actors together on screen and led many viewers to believe that they were watching the trailer for Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara 2. When audiences realised that the video was actually an advertisement for Yas Island, the initial excitement quickly turned into disappointment, with some fans directing their frustration at Zoya.

Recalling the incident, Zoya said she received abusive messages in her direct messages after the advertisement was released. She explained that people initially reacted enthusiastically because they believed the clip was connected to the sequel, before discovering that it was a commercial. The reunion nevertheless revived memories of the original film and renewed speculation about whether Hrithik, Abhay and Farhan could return as Arjun, Kabir and Imran in a potential second instalment.
Farhan Akhtar, who produced the original film and played Imran, had also expressed his enthusiasm for returning to the world of Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. In 2025, he said that questions about a sequel had continued since the first film’s release and described the experience of making the movie with Hrithik, Abhay, Katrina Kaif and Kalki Koechlin as one he would happily repeat. His comments further encouraged fans hoping for another road-trip story featuring the original characters.
Directed by Zoya Akhtar and produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani under Excel Entertainment, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara followed three childhood friends who travelled across Spain during a three-week bachelor-party road trip. The film became a major success and developed a cult following over the years for its themes of friendship, relationships, self-discovery and living in the present. While Zoya has not announced a release date or confirmed the returning cast for the sequel, her latest comments indicate that the project remains under consideration and that the team is working towards finding the right story.
