Shashi Tharoor Reviews Aryan Khan’s Directorial Debut, Calls it Sharp and Fearless Satire
Shashi Tharoor praises Aryan Khan’s Netflix series, calling it bold, witty, and “OTT gold”.
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has praised Aryan Khan’s directorial debut, the Netflix series “The Ba***ds of Bollywood”, calling it “absolute #OTT GOLD” and a sharp, audacious satire that exposes the underbelly of the Hindi film industry. In a detailed review shared on X while recovering from a cold, Tharoor revealed he watched the show on his sister Smita’s recommendation and found its writing fearless, its direction unflinching, and its humour laced with insider wit that pulls viewers behind the glamour. Despite a slow start, he noted, the series eventually leaves audiences “irresistibly hooked” with its clever takedowns of cinematic clichés and moving character moments.
Produced by Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment, the series features a strong ensemble cast including Lakshya, Bobby Deol, Mona Singh, and Manoj Pahwa, alongside surprise cameos from Bollywood stars. Tharoor highlighted the show’s genius in blending hilarity with unflinching commentary on power dynamics, nepotism, and ambition in the film world. He commended Aryan Khan for delivering a “masterpiece” in his first outing as director, urging him to “take a bow” for a work that Bollywood “needed”.
The review concluded with a warm father-to-father message to Shah Rukh Khan: “You must be so proud!!” Tharoor’s endorsement adds significant cultural weight to the series, which has sparked both acclaim and controversy since its release last month. Former NCB officer Sameer Wankhede filed a defamation suit against Netflix and the makers, alleging a character parodies him. Despite the legal challenge, the show continues to generate buzz for its bold storytelling and insider perspective.
