Malayalam Cinema Takes Over OTT Platforms This Week With Diverse Genre Lineup Starting May 22
Three new Malayalam films premiere May 22 across SonyLIV, Prime Video, and Sun NXT platforms.
Malayalam cinema viewers are set for a busy week on streaming platforms as several new films and entertainment titles prepare for their digital release. The latest Malayalam OTT slate includes romantic dramas, family entertainers, and crime thrillers arriving across major platforms such as SonyLIV, Sun NXT, and Amazon Prime Video. The upcoming releases are expected to offer a mix of humor, suspense, emotional storytelling, and musical entertainment for audiences across genres.
Among the major releases this week is Madhuvidhu, a romantic comedy directed by Vishnu Aravind. The film stars Sharafudheen in the lead role alongside Kalyani Panicker, with supporting performances from Jagadish, Saikumar, and Sreejaya Nair. Set in Adoor, the story follows Amrutharaj, also known as Ammu, who grows up in an all-male household and struggles to find a life partner. After finally falling in love, he faces emotional conflicts and misunderstandings that begin to strain the relationship, leading the narrative into themes of compromise, family expectations, and emotional growth.
The film is scheduled to begin streaming on May 22 on SonyLIV and is being positioned as a light-hearted entertainer with emotional depth. Industry observers note that Malayalam audiences have increasingly responded well to realistic relationship dramas mixed with humor and relatable family situations. With Sharafudheen continuing to gain popularity for his versatile performances, expectations around the film remain high ahead of its OTT debut.

Another key release arriving this week is Bhishmar, a romantic musical family entertainer featuring Dhyan Srinivasan and Vishnu Unnikrishnan in their first onscreen collaboration. The film also stars Divya Pillai and Ammayra Goswami in important roles. Positioned as a feel-good entertainer, the movie combines comedy, romance, music, and emotional family moments aimed at attracting both younger viewers and family audiences. Bhishmar will stream on Sun NXT and Prime Video starting May 22.
The Malayalam OTT lineup also includes Shesha 2016, a bilingual crime thriller directed by Pradeep Arasikere. The film, which was simultaneously shot in Malayalam and Kannada, stars Devaraj, Pramod Shetty, and John Kaippallil in pivotal roles. The thriller revolves around an intense investigation layered with suspense, drama, and complex character arcs. Since its theatrical release earlier this year, the film has drawn attention for its dark narrative style and investigative storytelling approach. It is also scheduled for release on Sun NXT from May 22nd.
Streaming platforms continue to expand their Malayalam content libraries as demand for regional cinema grows steadily across India and international markets. Industry analysts believe OTT services are increasingly investing in Malayalam films due to their strong storytelling reputation and consistent audience engagement. With more releases expected to be announced in the coming weeks, viewers are likely to see a wider mix of thrillers, dramas, romantic comedies, and experimental narratives entering the digital entertainment space.
