L2: Empuraan Sees Day 2 Drop, Crosses ₹30 Crore at Box Office
Despite the dip, the film has managed to cross the ₹30 crore mark within two days.
After a stellar debut at the box office, Malayalam action drama starring Mohanlal and directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran ‘L2: Empuraan’ witnessed a dip in collections on its second day, collecting ₹33.25 crore in two days, as per trade portal Sacnilk.com.
On its opening day of March 27, L2: Empuraan shattered records by earning ₹21.5 crore, becoming the highest-grossing Malayalam film on its first day. However, the momentum slowed on Friday, with early estimates indicating collections of ₹11.75 crore. Despite the dip, the film has managed to cross the ₹30 crore mark within two days. The film's global appeal, however, remains intact, as it raked in ₹67.50 crore worldwide on its first day, with an overseas collection of ₹43 crore.
The sequel to the 2019 hit Lucifer, L2: Empuraan continues the story of Stephen Nedumpally, also known as Khureshi-Ab’raam, portrayed by Mohanlal. The film has been directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, who also stars in a pivotal role. The ensemble cast includes Tovino Thomas, Abhimanyu Singh, Manju Warrier, Jerome Flynn, and Eriq Ebouaney.
The movie saw a 42.13% occupancy rate for Malayalam screenings on Friday, while its Hindi version had a mere 4.69% occupancy.
Produced by Antony Perumbavoor, Gokulam Gopalan, and Subaskaran Allirajah, L2: Empuraan is touted to be one of the most expensive productions in Malayalam cinema. Written by Murali Gopy, the film is packed with socio-political drama and Mohanlal’s commanding screen presence.
With Salman Khan's Sikandar set to release on March 30, it remains to be seen how L2: Empuraan will fare in the coming days. Fans are hopeful that the weekend will see a resurgence in box office numbers.
