Haq Crosses Borders: Courtroom Drama Wins Hearts in Pakistan and Nigeria

Haq gains unexpected popularity on Netflix in Pakistan and Nigeria.

Haq, the courtroom drama inspired by the landmark 1985 Shah Bano case, has found an unexpected and enthusiastic audience in Pakistan and Nigeria following its Netflix release on January 2, 2026. While initially anticipated to resonate primarily with Indian viewers, the film’s themes of faith, law, marriage, and women’s rights have struck a chord internationally.

Directed by Suparn S Varma, Haq follows Shazia, played by Yami Gautam, as she battles her husband, portrayed by Emraan Hashmi, in a gripping legal and emotional conflict over a Muslim woman’s right to maintenance. Gautam’s performance has been praised for its authenticity and restraint, while Hashmi’s portrayal of a manipulative husband adds unsettling realism, making the courtroom drama both compelling and thought-provoking.

Within days of its release, the film not only topped Netflix India’s charts but also reached number two globally among non-English films. By its second week, Haq had amassed 4.5 million views in India alone, holding strong against bigger-budget and longer-running titles.

Analysts note that the resonance of Haq in Pakistan and Nigeria underscores the universality of its subject matter. The exploration of faith, legal systems, and gender dynamics transcends borders, showing how stories rooted in local contexts can spark global conversations.

With its strong performances, sensitive handling of controversial topics, and cross-cultural relevance, Haq has emerged as a noteworthy example of Indian cinema finding international traction on streaming platforms.
