Can Jewel Thief Steal a March over Dev Anand's Original?

For a generation of viewers, Jewel Thief would always be that 1967 hit starring Dev Anand, Ashok Kumar and Vyjayanthimala Bali. The showman Dev Anand tried a sequel to it in 1996, with the obvious title Return of Jewel Thief. But it sank without a trace.

But now, Jewel Thief with the tag 'The Heist Begins' is coming to your homes as a Netflix film. Directed by Kookie Gulati and Robbie Grewal, the new Jewel Thief, as stated in its breathless promos, will be 'a gripping tale of deception, danger, and desire'. It stars, among others, Saif Ali Khan, Jaideep Ahlawat, Kunal Kapoor and Nikita Dutta.

As per media reports, the story revolves around Rehan Roy (Saif Ali Khan), a cunning thief who finds himself entangled in a deadly game of wits. His target is the coveted African Red Sun jewel. Angling for the same is Rajan Aulakh (Jaideep Ahlawat), a cold mafia boss. There is also Vikram Patel (Kunal Kapoor), a sincere detective determined to catch Rehan, and Farah (Nikita Dutta), who has stolen Rehan's heart.

The film marks Marflix Pictures' streaming debut and its first collaboration with Netflix. The film has been shot in Mumbai and Budapest. The soundtrack features music by Sachin-Jigar and OAFF-Savera, with the first single Jaadu already released.

The trailer is being talked about for its stylish visuals and action sequences. Netflix's Director of Original Films, Ruchikaa Kapoor Sheikh, described the film as 'an ode to classic Bollywood heist films,' blending big action, adventure, and blockbuster flair. The makers have claimed that this Jewel Thief has no real connection to the original one. But the final confirmation can be had only after the film’s arrival.

The heist drama will be released on Netflix on April 25, 2025.
