Rani Mukerji’s Miscarriage Inspired Her Iconic Role in Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway
Personal grief fueled her deep connection to the story of maternal loss
Rani Mukerji has opened up about the profoundly personal reason she chose to star in Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway, the film that earned her a National Award for Best Actress. In a recent interview with Pinkvilla, the actress shared that the script arrived in 2020, during one of the most painful periods of her life—right after she suffered a miscarriage and lost her second child. The overwhelming sense of loss she was experiencing made the film’s storyline resonate powerfully with her emotions.
Rani described how the narrative immediately gripped her. “That story came to me at a time when I had lost my second child. My sense of loss was huge, and hearing the film’s story, I got so attached to it that I said this is a story I have to tell people,” she explained in Hindi. The movie centers on a mother’s desperate struggle and profound loneliness after being separated from her children, a theme that mirrored her own grief and drove her to bring the tale to the screen.
She also emphasized a larger message she wanted to convey to Indian audiences: the harsh realities of settling abroad often contrast sharply with the dreams many hold. “I wanted to tell people in Hindustan that our obsession with going abroad and settling there isn’t the truth—the reality is very different,” Rani said. She aimed to portray the unbearable pain a mother feels when her children are taken away in front of her eyes, and the emotional toll it takes on both the parent and the children.

Directed by Ashima Chibber and inspired by real events, Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway follows an Indian mother’s battle against the Norwegian child welfare system after her children are removed due to cultural differences. Rani’s raw and authentic performance captured the anguish of that fight, earning widespread acclaim.
This revelation arrives as Rani celebrates 30 years in cinema with the release of Mardaani 3 today (January 30, 2026). The third film in the hit franchise sees her return as the fearless cop Shivani Shivaji Roy, this time confronting a female antagonist for the first time, continuing her legacy of impactful, socially relevant roles.
