Veteran Kannada actor Bank Janardhan, known for his iconic comic roles and endearing screen presence, passed away late Sunday night at the age of 77. He breathed his last at Manipal Hospital in Bengaluru, where he had been admitted following age-related health complications.
Born in 1948 in Holalkere, Chitradurga district, Karnataka, Janardhan rose to fame with his distinctive performances in over 500 Kannada films across a career spanning more than four decades. He was affectionately nicknamed “Bank Janardhan” following his breakout role in the film ‘Banker Margayya’, and remained a beloved figure in both cinema and television.
According to sources, the veteran actor had been in fragile health since suffering a heart attack in 2023. His condition reportedly worsened over time, and he had been under medical care in recent weeks. A photo of him from his hospital bed surfaced on social media after his demise, highlighting the actor’s long and difficult health battle.

Janardhan was widely celebrated for his comic timing and character roles, often portraying fatherly or humorous figures that resonated deeply with audiences. His notable films include ‘Anjada Gandu’, ‘Putakkana Highway’, ‘Tharle Nan Maga’, ‘Ganesh Subramanya’, ‘Kaurava’, and ‘Jee Boomba’. He also appeared in popular television shows such as ‘Paapa Pandu’, further cementing his legacy in the Kannada entertainment industry.
His last film appearance was in ‘Undenama’, directed by K L Rajashekhar, which hit theatres in April 2023.
