Indira Lankesh, Kannada Writer And Journalist, Dies At 84 In Bengaluru

Indira Lankesh passes away at 84 in Bengaluru.

Writer and author Indira Lankesh, aged 84, passed away in Bengaluru on Monday morning due to age-related ailments, marking the end of a life closely associated with Karnataka’s literary and journalistic circles. She was the wife of noted Kannada writer, journalist and Lankesh Patrike founder P. Lankesh, and had long been regarded as an important presence in the state’s cultural and intellectual landscape.

Indira Lankesh was known for her contributions to Kannada literature and her memoir Huli Maavu Mattu Naanu (The Tamarind Tree and I), which reflected on her personal journey, experiences and observations from a life spent amid literature, media and public discourse. Her work was appreciated for its introspective tone and its connection to Karnataka’s evolving social and cultural fabric.

She is survived by her son Indrajit Lankesh and daughter Kavitha Lankesh, both of whom are filmmakers. Her elder daughter, journalist Gauri Lankesh, was tragically killed in 2017, a loss that drew national attention and widespread condemnation. Indira Lankesh had remained a significant figure within the family’s literary and media legacy over the years.

Chief Minister DK Shivakumar expressed condolences, describing Indira Lankesh as a foundational force behind P. Lankesh’s achievements in literature, journalism and cinema. He highlighted her involvement in writing, publishing and business activities, noting that she lived a life marked by resilience and determination and served as an inspiration for women.

Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara also mourned her passing, stating that Kannada literature and journalism had lost an important pillar. He said her contributions to literary thought, social reflection and public life would be remembered and continue to influence future generations within Karnataka’s cultural sphere.

As tributes continue to pour in from across the state’s literary and political circles, Indira Lankesh is being remembered for her quiet yet enduring influence on Kannada intellectual life and her role in shaping a prominent literary family legacy.
