Daniel Radcliffe Says Son Doesn’t Know Harry Potter, Enjoys Being “Just Dad”

Daniel Radcliffe says his son unaware of Harry Potter fame

Actor Daniel Radcliffe has revealed that his three-year-old son is still unaware of his father’s global fame as the lead actor in the Harry Potter film series, and said he is content to be known simply as “Dad” for as long as possible. In a recent interview with The New York Times, Radcliffe said he finds comfort in the fact that his child does not yet associate him with the iconic role that made him one of the most recognisable actors in the world.

He recalled a recent incident at home when a signed Harry Potter DVD was lying on a kitchen table, and his son did not recognise him on the cover. Radcliffe said he intentionally pointed to the image in a lighthearted way, but the child showed no awareness of his father’s past work. The actor said he values this stage of life, where his identity at home is not shaped by fame.

He explained that maintaining a normal family environment is important to him, especially given the scale of attention he has lived with since childhood. Radcliffe added that he hopes to preserve this simplicity for as long as possible before his son becomes aware of his public career. Radcliffe rose to international fame at the age of 11 when he was cast as Harry Potter in the film adaptations of J.K. Rowling’s bestselling novels.

Over the course of eight films released between 2001 and 2011, he became a central figure in one of the most successful franchises in cinematic history, gaining worldwide recognition that continues to define his public image. Beyond his acting career, Radcliffe has since worked in theatre and independent films, deliberately choosing diverse roles to move beyond the shadow of the wizarding character that made him famous.

Despite this, he remains closely associated with the franchise in popular culture. Speaking more broadly about fatherhood, Radcliffe described becoming a parent as both overwhelming and deeply rewarding. He said the experience brings constant challenges but also immense joy and perspective. He also spoke warmly about his partner, Erin Darke, praising her as a wonderful mother and describing the experience of watching her parent their child as “incredible” and “beautiful.”

Radcliffe added that fatherhood has been the most meaningful part of his life so far, calling his son “the best thing that’s ever happened” to him. He said the experience has shifted his priorities away from public recognition and toward family life, where everyday moments carry greater significance than his past fame.
