TN CM Stalin Announces Compensation for Victims of Police Vehicle Road Accident

Kin refuse 3 victims until justice, jobs granted.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin announced Rs 3 lakh solatium each for the families of three road accident victims killed by a police vehicle in Sivaganga on Tuesday, along with Rs 1 lakh for the sole survivor. The deceased—P Prasath (28), his wife P Sathya (24), and their four-year-old son P Thasvanth—died in a head-on collision with a speeding Organised Crime Intelligence Unit van driven by Head Constable S Balamurugan on the Poovanthi-Sakkudi stretch.

Grieving relatives staged a protest outside Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai on Wednesday, refusing to accept the bodies until their demands are met. They insist on immediate arrest of the driver, government jobs for kin, private hospital treatment for survivor T Soneswari (28), action against police who lathi-charged protesters, and higher compensation. The family hails from Chittampatti and was returning from a funeral when the tragedy struck.

Poovanthi police have registered a case against Balamurugan under BNS Sections 281 (rash driving), 125(A) (endangering life), and 106(1) (causing death by negligence), based on Soneswari’s complaint. Stalin directed authorities to provide specialized medical care to the injured woman, who remains under treatment at the government facility despite family objections.

The protest escalated after Tuesday’s alleged police high-handedness during initial demonstrations at the accident site. Relatives claim the officer was driving recklessly without emergency lights or siren, demanding accountability and systemic reforms to prevent such incidents involving official vehicles.

With bodies still in the mortuary and talks ongoing, local administration faces mounting pressure to resolve the standoff. The CM’s relief package has been acknowledged, but the family vows to continue the blockade until every demand—including justice and long-term security—is fully addressed.
