Ranveer Singh Faced FIR Over Daiva Imitation Before 'Dhurandhar - The Revenge' Release

Ranveer Singh's returns to screens with Dhurandhar The Revenge.

Ranveer Singh found himself at the centre of a controversy following a public appearance at the closing ceremony of the International Film Festival of India in November 2025, where remarks and an on-stage imitation linked to the film Kantara: Chapter 1 triggered backlash and eventually led to a police complaint. The incident occurred just days before the release of Singh’s spy thriller Dhurandhar and sparked a wider debate about cultural sensitivity and the portrayal of sacred traditions.

During the event on November 30, Singh recreated a moment inspired by the Daiva ritual sequence from Kantara: Chapter 1 while praising the film’s star and director, Rishab Shetty. In his remarks, Singh attempted to highlight Shetty’s performance but referred to a character in the sequence as a “female ghost,” which drew criticism from viewers. Clips of the moment circulated widely on social media, with many accusing the actor of misunderstanding the cultural and spiritual significance of the Daiva tradition practiced in coastal Karnataka.

Videos from the ceremony showed Rishab Shetty initially reacting with a smile but later appearing to gesture for Singh to stop mimicking the ritual performance. According to people present at the event, Singh had stepped down from the stage to greet guests, including veteran actor Rajinikanth, when he excitedly began imitating the Daiva act upon meeting Shetty. Although the request to stop was reportedly made politely, the gesture sparked criticism because Daiva worship is considered sacred in the Tulu Nadu region, particularly through rituals such as Bhuta Kola.

The controversy later moved beyond social media when a Bengaluru-based advocate filed an FIR accusing Singh of hurting religious sentiments. Singh approached the Karnataka High Court, which granted interim relief and directed authorities not to take coercive action against him while the investigation continues. The actor subsequently issued a public apology, saying he intended only to appreciate Shetty’s performance and had no intention of disrespecting any tradition. Meanwhile, Singh is preparing for the release of the sequel Dhurandhar: The Revenge, scheduled to hit theatres on March 19.
