Sudha Chandran Defends Ananya, Blames Choreographers for Chand Mera Dil Misstep

Sudha Chandran defends Ananya, criticises makers over classical dance.

Veteran actor and classical dancer Sudha Chandran has come out in support of actor Ananya Panday amid the controversy surrounding a Bharatanatyam-inspired dance sequence from the film Chand Mera Dil. The sequence recently went viral on social media and drew criticism from several viewers, who argued that the performance blended traditional Bharatanatyam elements with contemporary choreography in a manner they considered disrespectful to the classical dance form. The debate quickly gained traction online, prompting reactions from members of the entertainment and dance communities.

Addressing the controversy, Sudha Chandran said she understood the concerns raised by Bharatanatyam enthusiasts but stressed that the criticism should not be directed at Ananya Panday. Speaking to FilmiBeat, Chandran described herself as a purist and said traditional art forms should be handled with care and respect. She cautioned against altering classical traditions merely for the sake of appearing modern or experimental, arguing that such attempts can sometimes reduce respected cultural practices to caricatures.

Chandran explained that while some evolution in artistic expression is natural, there is a difference between thoughtful adaptation and excessive modification. She noted that previous generations of Bharatanatyam performers preserved the essence of the dance even when introducing contemporary elements. According to her, classical art forms carry established protocols and deep emotional connections for practitioners and audiences, making it important to approach them with sensitivity.

Despite her criticism of the presentation, Chandran made it clear that Ananya Panday should not be held responsible for the choreography. She pointed out that actors generally perform routines designed and taught by professional choreographers. Chandran said the responsibility for maintaining authenticity and respecting the traditions of classical dance rests largely with the creative team behind the performance rather than with performers who execute the choreography they are given.

The controversy began after a clip from Chand Mera Dil showed Ananya Panday's character Chandni performing a Bharatanatyam fusion dance on stage while Lakshya's character watched from the audience. The sequence sparked widespread discussion online, with some users praising the attempt to blend traditional and modern styles, while others criticised it for straying too far from the classical form's established techniques and aesthetic principles.

Directed by Vivek Soni and produced by Dharma Productions, Chand Mera Dil stars Ananya Panday and Lakshya in the lead roles. The romantic drama, centred on the love story of Aarav and Chandni, was released in theatres on May 22. While the film received mixed reviews from critics and audiences, the dance sequence has continued to generate discussion, highlighting the broader debate around preserving classical art forms while adapting them for contemporary cinema.
