Riteish Deshmukh reveals Salman, Abhishek, and Vidya worked pro bono for the Raja Shivaji film.
Actor and filmmaker Riteish Deshmukh has revealed that several top Bollywood stars, including Salman Khan, Abhishek Bachchan and Vidya Balan, did not charge any fee for their roles in the historical action drama Raja Shivaji. The film, which released in theatres on May 1, 2026, features a large ensemble cast and is based on the life of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
Deshmukh, who plays the titular role of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj said that many actors came on board purely out of personal affection, trust, and respect rather than financial considerations. According to him, the decision of several prominent stars to work without remuneration reflects the strong professional bonds and long-standing friendships within the industry. He described the collaboration as an example of “unconditional love and respect” among colleagues.
In his interaction with Live Times, Deshmukh said that actors such as Salman Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Vidya Balan, Fardeen Khan, Boman Irani, Genelia Deshmukh, and others agreed to work on the film without charging fees. He explained that these decisions were not preceded by formal negotiations over payment, as mutual trust and commitment to the project played a central role in bringing the cast together.

Deshmukh further shared that Abhishek Bachchan agreed to the film without even asking detailed questions about his character, highlighting the ease with which some actors committed to the project. He added that discussions around remuneration were not prioritised during the casting process, as the focus remained on the film’s vision and storytelling rather than commercial arrangements.
Released under the banners of Jio Studios and Mumbai Film Company, Raja Shivaji features a sprawling ensemble cast including Sanjay Dutt, Mahesh Manjrekar, Sachin Khedekar, Bhagyashree, Fardeen Khan, Jitendra Joshi, Boman Irani, Amol Gupte, and Genelia Deshmukh. Salman Khan also makes a cameo appearance in the film, which portrays the early life of Shivaji Bhosale and his rise against dominant powers to establish Hindavi Swarajya.
Critical reception to the film has noted both its scale and performances, with particular attention to its depiction of historical figures and relationships. The narrative highlights Shivaji’s journey alongside key characters such as Sambhaji Shahaji Bhosale, portrayed by Abhishek Bachchan, and explores the role of women in his life, including Jijabai and Saibai, who are depicted as influential figures in shaping his path.
