Ranveer Singh Controversy Raises Fresh Questions Over Film Industry ‘Bans’

Ranveer Singh faces legal questions after film workers’ body announces ‘ban’.

A growing dispute between Ranveer Singh and the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has sparked fresh debate within the Hindi film industry over the legal and practical implications of a non-cooperation directive issued against the actor. The controversy emerged after Ranveer’s reported last-minute exit from Don 3, which allegedly led to concerns over financial losses and contractual complications raised by filmmaker Farhan Akhtar and the film’s producers.

According to FWICE president Ashoke Pandit, the federation initially attempted to engage with Ranveer Singh privately after receiving a complaint from the Don 3 team. Pandit claimed the actor later responded through email, arguing that FWICE did not have jurisdiction over what he considered a contractual dispute and that such matters should be resolved through legal or arbitration channels rather than industry bodies.

Following the exchange, FWICE issued a Non-Cooperation Directive (NCD) against the actor. The federation represents workers across the film and television industry through 38 affiliated unions, including technicians, spot boys, makeup artists, directors and other crew members. A non-cooperation directive effectively functions as a trade-union boycott, asking members not to work on projects involving the targeted individual until the dispute is resolved.

Legally, however, the directive does not carry the force of state-imposed punishment. Industry experts note that while trade bodies like FWICE often mediate disputes involving wages, working conditions and professional grievances, contractual disagreements involving financial damages or breach of agreements are ultimately matters for civil courts or arbitration tribunals. Ranveer Singh’s position that FWICE lacks authority over contractual enforcement therefore carries legal weight.

At the same time, the practical impact of such directives within the film industry can be significant. Since film productions depend heavily on unionised crew members and technicians, any organised refusal to cooperate can complicate scheduling, production logistics and day-to-day operations on film sets. The standoff could potentially affect future projects involving the actor if the dispute remains unresolved for an extended period.

Ranveer Singh’s spokesperson has maintained a conciliatory tone throughout the controversy, stating that the actor holds “the highest regard for the film fraternity” and everyone associated with the Don franchise. The statement added that he wished the franchise success and believed professional disagreements should be handled with “dignity, maturity and mutual respect.” Meanwhile, attention is now turning toward Ranveer’s upcoming post-apocalyptic thriller Pralay, directed by Jai Mehta and backed by Hansal Mehta, which is scheduled to begin production in August 2026.
