Rajpal Yadav Walks Free From Tihar Jail After Rs 9 Crore Cheque Case
Bollywood actor secures interim bail in long-running financial dispute linked to his 2012 film venture.
Actor Rajpal Yadav was released from Tihar Jail on Tuesday, 12 days after surrendering in connection with a Rs 9 crore cheque-bounce and loan default case. The Delhi High Court had granted him interim bail on Monday, though procedural verification delayed his release until later in the day.
Rajpal surrendered on February 5 after the court denied his plea for additional time to repay the outstanding dues. The case involves a principal loan of Rs 5 crore, which, along with interest and penalties, totals nearly Rs 9 crore, tied to his 2012 film Ata Pata Laapata.
Speaking to ANI after his release, Rajpal expressed gratitude to the court and supporters. “I will complete 30 years in Bollywood in 2027… if there are any allegations against me, I am available to answer. Thank you, High Court,” he said, reflecting on his decades-long career and the support he has received from fans nationwide.

Businessman Madhav Gopal Agrawal, who had lent the money, recounted his ordeal in an interview. He stated that Rajpal initially requested urgent funding for the film and that repeated assurances and cheques were provided as guarantees. However, all supplementary agreements and cheques issued over time were allegedly dishonoured, prompting the legal dispute.
Agrawal also shared that he was emotionally persuaded to fund the film after messages from Rajpal’s wife, Radha, and claimed he even borrowed money himself to meet the actor’s requests. “It was a loan, not an investment,” he stressed, noting that repayment was contractually mandatory regardless of the film’s performance.
The interim bail provides temporary relief for Rajpal, but the case remains ongoing in court. Legal proceedings will continue to determine the final resolution of the Rs 9 crore dispute, which has drawn significant media attention due to Rajpal’s celebrity status and the case’s financial complexities.
