Prabhas’ The Raja Saab Sees Slow Box Office Growth After Day Two

Prabhas' horror-comedy struggles with weak box office performance.

The Raja Saab, starring Prabhas, has recorded a disappointing second day at the worldwide box office, accumulating just ₹138.30 crore after two days of release. According to Sacnilk.com, the film's India net collection stands at ₹90.75 crore, while overseas markets contributed ₹30 crore. The sluggish pace has raised concerns about the film's prospects for a strong first weekend, especially given its high expectations as a pan-India horror-comedy entertainer.

The production house's official figures show a slight variation, claiming a Day 1 worldwide gross of over ₹112 crore, which they described as the biggest opening ever for a horror fantasy film in India. Despite the celebratory post on social media, the overall trajectory remains underwhelming. By the same stage, Prabhas' previous release Kalki 2898 AD had amassed ₹298 crore worldwide, with ₹149.3 crore nett in India alone, highlighting a significant drop in momentum for the actor's latest venture.

Directed and written by Maruthi, The Raja Saab features an ensemble cast including Sanjay Dutt, Boman Irani, Malavika Mohanan, Nidhhi Agerwal, and Riddhi Kumar. The film was released pan-India on January 9 in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam. Prabhas had earlier praised the script, particularly its climax, calling it a return to full entertainer mode after years of action-heavy projects and expressing hope for blockbuster status during the Sankranti season.

Reviews of the film have been mixed, with critics noting that while the horror-comedy genre has strong precedents in Indian cinema, The Raja Saab falls short in delivering depth and originality. The Hindustan Times review described it as relying on scattered ideas rather than a cohesive and brilliant narrative, suggesting the film prioritises broad laughs over meaningful storytelling or innovation.

With the first weekend drawing to a close, industry observers indicate that The Raja Saab will need a substantial jump in collections over the remaining days to salvage its run. The film's underperformance contrasts sharply with Prabhas' recent box office successes and raises questions about audience reception of the horror-comedy blend in the current market.
