Odia Music Icon Abhijit Majumdar Passes Away at 54

Renowned Odia Music Composer and Singer Abhijit Majumdar breathed his last on January 25, 2026, at the age of 54. He passed away at AIIMS Bhubaneswar following a cardiac arrest at 7:43 AM, despite immediate resuscitation efforts by the medical team. Majumdar had been battling multiple health complications, including chronic liver disease, hypertension, and hypothyroidism, since his admission to the hospital in September 2024. His sudden demise has sent shockwaves through Odisha’s cultural and film circles, marking a profound loss for the state’s music heritage.
Born in Cuttack, Abhijit Majumdar emerged as a defining force in Odia cinema and music starting in the early 1990s. Over his illustrious career spanning more than three decades, he composed and directed music for over 700 songs across films and albums. His soulful melodies and distinctive style captured the hearts of generations of Odia listeners, blending traditional elements with contemporary flair to create timeless hits that resonated deeply in the region’s entertainment landscape.
Tributes have poured in from leaders and the fraternity alike. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed deep sorrow, calling it an irreparable loss to music, cinema, and culture, while praying for the departed soul’s peace. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan remembered Majumdar’s unique contributions that earned him a special place in Odia hearts. BJP leader Baijayant Jay Panda described the moment as the “end of an era” in Odia music, highlighting the irreplaceable void left behind.
