Jenna Ortega, Bong Joon Ho, and Celine Song Sound Alarm on AI’s Growing Role in Cinema

Stars warn AI could undermine human creativity in filmmaking at Marrakech Festival.

At the Marrakech Film Festival, prominent cinema figures Jenna Ortega, Bong Joon Ho, and Celine Song voiced deep concerns about the increasing influence of artificial intelligence in filmmaking and its potential to erode the human element central to artistic expression. Each speaker highlighted the irreplaceable qualities of human creativity, urging caution as technology becomes more integrated into the film industry.

Celine Song, director of Past Lives, emphasized how AI threatens to quietly reshape the experience and artistry of cinema. She pointed out that no algorithm can replicate the lived experiences, struggles, and unique perspectives a cinematographer brings to a film frame. Song referenced Guillermo del Toro’s stand against using AI in his work as an example of preserving artistic authenticity in the face of technological encroachment.

Jenna Ortega echoed these concerns, reflecting on a sense of "deep uncertainty" with AI’s rise. She warned that technology risks removing the imperfections that make art deeply human. Ortega argued that, unlike computers, true storytelling requires soul and genuine emotion. She expressed hope that future audiences will grow weary of AI-generated content and instead appreciate small, personal films created without reliance on machines.

In contrast, Bong Joon Ho acknowledged AI’s potential to clarify the distinctions between uniquely human and mechanized tasks within art and filmmaking. However, he used dark humor to express his apprehensions, joking about the desire to assemble a military squad to eliminate AI. While recognizing its possibilities, Bong remains wary of the impact unchecked AI might have on artists and creativity.

The conversation at the festival highlights a significant debate emerging across the entertainment industry as AI tools become more accessible. The balance between embracing innovation and safeguarding the essence of human storytelling remains a critical challenge for filmmakers worldwide.
