Sheetal Menon's Duet Marks Spotify Film Debut
Short film audiences in India are set to get a new viewing platform as filmmaker Sheetal Menon’s Duet prepares to become the first short film to release on Spotify. The Sidhant Gupta-starrer will premiere on the audio streaming platform on July 30, marking a new development in the digital distribution space for Indian short films. Over the past decade, short films in India have moved beyond limited online platforms, with the growth of streaming services providing filmmakers with more avenues to reach audiences.
Duet adds another chapter to this evolution by bringing a narrative short film to Spotify for the first time. Backed by filmmaker Bejoy Nambiar and produced under the Getaway Pictures banner, Duet stars Sidhant Gupta in the lead role. The film is directed by Sheetal Menon, who has also conceptualised the story and co-written the screenplay with Arpita Chatterjee. The film follows a pianist who struggles with the sudden death of his estranged brother during the isolation of the global pandemic.
The story explores themes of grief, loss and emotional recovery through the character’s connection with music. The narrative revolves around a mysterious duet that becomes a source of hope for the protagonist as he attempts to process his brother’s passing. Through music, the film examines the ways people cope with loneliness and find emotional connections during difficult periods. Speaking about the film, Sheetal Menon said Duet emerged from the grief and isolation experienced by many people during the pandemic.

She described the project as a deeply personal story that took longer than expected to reach audiences. “For any storyteller, the moment of sharing a film with the world is almost impossible to put into words,” Menon said. She added that there were moments when she questioned whether she should continue working on the film, but the story continued to motivate her. The filmmaker said the release serves as a reminder of the importance of staying committed to stories that creators believe in.
According to her, the journey of bringing Duet to audiences was shaped by patience, persistence and a strong emotional connection to the subject. Along with its Spotify premiere, Duet will also be available on Getaway Pictures’ YouTube channel, giving viewers additional access to the film. The project features a combination of established names from the entertainment industry, including actor Sidhant Gupta and producer Bejoy Nambiar.
Its release also reflects the expanding opportunities for short filmmakers as digital platforms continue to explore new formats and storytelling approaches. With Spotify entering the short film space through Duet, the release highlights how streaming platforms are increasingly becoming important destinations for different forms of visual storytelling. The film’s July 30 premiere will mark a first for the platform and a new milestone for India’s short film ecosystem.
