Shakeel Noorani Arrested After Aspiring Actor Files Rape Complaint Against Filmmaker

Bollywood filmmaker Shakeel Noorani was arrested in Mumbai after a 33-year-old aspiring actor accused him of rape, sexual assault and threats, police officials said on Monday. The 73-year-old filmmaker was arrested after investigators traced him to his farmhouse in Mahabaleshwar, a hill station located more than 200 km from Mumbai. Police said Noorani had allegedly gone into hiding after an FIR was registered following the woman's complaint. According to the complaint, the woman alleged that Noorani sexually assaulted her repeatedly over a period of four years. She also accused him of poisoning her, claiming that the alleged act resulted in a miscarriage.

The allegations are part of the police case and have not been established in court. Investigators are examining the woman's statements and other evidence as part of the probe. The woman further alleged that Noorani called her to his residence in Mumbai's Malvani area on the pretext of discussing the script of an upcoming film project. During the meeting, she claimed that he spiked her drink before sexually assaulting her. The complaint forms the basis of the FIR registered against the filmmaker, after which police began efforts to locate him.

Police officials said investigators traced Noorani to his farmhouse in Mahabaleshwar on Saturday and took him into custody. His arrest came after the registration of the case and the subsequent search for him. Authorities are expected to question him about the allegations and examine the circumstances surrounding the woman's claims, including the alleged incidents over the past four years. Noorani is known for directing Hindi films including Joru Ka Ghulam, starring Govinda, and Bade Dilwala, which featured Suniel Shetty.

His arrest has brought renewed attention to allegations concerning the exploitation of aspiring actors within the film industry, particularly where professional opportunities are allegedly used as a pretext for private meetings. Investigators may examine medical records, communications and other material relevant to the allegations, including the woman's claim that she suffered a miscarriage after being allegedly poisoned.
