Madhu Chopra Addresses Kriti Sanon’s Rakhi Ad Row, Supports Priyanka’s Bold Style Choices

Madhu Chopra Defends Priyanka Amid Ad Row.

Madhu Chopra, mother of actor Priyanka Chopra Jonas, has weighed in on the controversy surrounding Kriti Sanon's outfit in a GIVA advertisement, saying that the idea of “my body, my choice” should be accompanied by boundaries, dignity and consideration for the setting. Speaking at the Women Building Cinema Together event in Mumbai, Madhu said clothing choices could be personal but also needed to take into account social and cultural values.

Kriti Sanon recently faced criticism on social media over her revealing outfit in the jewellery brand's advertisement. The controversy prompted a wider discussion about women's clothing, personal choice and the standards applied to celebrities. Madhu Chopra was asked about the debate and acknowledged the principle of personal freedom while arguing that context and occasion also matter.

“My body, my choice is right, but woh daayra zaruri hai,” Madhu said at the event. She stressed the importance of dignity and respecting the values of others. According to her, people can choose to wear outfits that may be considered unconventional in places where such clothing is socially accepted, but she felt the same approach may attract criticism in settings where it is not considered normal.

Madhu Chopra also addressed the question of her daughter Priyanka Chopra Jonas, who has frequently appeared in bold and revealing outfits for professional commitments and public appearances. When asked about Priyanka's choices, Madhu defended her daughter while explaining that she believes clothing should also be appropriate to the occasion and aesthetically suited to the setting.

“My kids also wear such clothes, for work and because they like wearing them,” Madhu said. She added that she nevertheless believed they should “look good aesthetically as per the occasion”. According to her, when an outfit does not appear appropriate or aesthetically suited to a particular occasion, it can become a subject of public criticism. Her comments come amid an ongoing debate over Kriti's appearance in the GIVA campaign.

The advertisement generated strong reactions online, with some social media users criticising the styling while others defended Kriti's freedom to choose what she wears. The discussion has subsequently expanded beyond the advertisement itself to questions about how Indian celebrities navigate fashion, commercial campaigns and cultural expectations.

Madhu's remarks attempted to draw a distinction between personal choice and social context. While acknowledging that individuals have the right to decide what they wear, she argued that public figures also operate within environments where cultural expectations can influence how their choices are received. The comments also highlight the different standards celebrities face when appearing in advertisements or at public events.

Actors frequently experiment with fashion and styling as part of their professional image, but their choices can attract significantly different reactions depending on the audience, platform and occasion. The debate surrounding Kriti Sanon's GIVA advertisement has therefore become part of a larger conversation about celebrity fashion and personal expression.

Supporters of individual choice have argued that women should not be judged based on their clothing, while critics have focused on whether particular outfits are appropriate for specific public settings or campaigns. Madhu Chopra's response reflects a position that acknowledges personal freedom while placing emphasis on social context. Her defence of Priyanka also makes clear that she does not object to her children wearing bold outfits, particularly for work or because they personally like them.

Instead, she believes the setting and overall presentation should be considered. The controversy is likely to continue generating discussion as celebrities and public figures respond to the criticism surrounding Kriti's campaign. Madhu's comments have added another perspective to the debate, particularly because they address both the principle of personal choice and the expectations surrounding public appearances in India.
