Govinda Pays Emotional Tribute To Pahlaj Nihalani, Recalls His Support For Artists
Govinda recalls Pahlaj Nihalani’s support for struggling artists.
Veteran Bollywood actor Govinda paid an emotional tribute to late film producer and former Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) chairperson Pahlaj Nihalani, who passed away at the age of 76. The producer, known for backing several successful Hindi films, was widely credited with giving Govinda his first major break in the 1986 film Ilzaam.
Several members of the film fraternity gathered at Nihalani’s residence in Mumbai on Thursday to offer their final respects. Govinda, who shared a long professional association with the producer, was among those who attended and spoke to the media, recalling Nihalani’s role in shaping the early phase of his career. Speaking emotionally, Govinda described Pahlaj Nihalani as a foundational figure in his journey in the film industry.
He said that the producer played a crucial role in helping several artists, including himself, rise from difficult financial circumstances and establish themselves in Bollywood. Govinda credited Nihalani with supporting him at a time when opportunities were limited, adding that his association with the producer marked a turning point in his professional life. He noted that Nihalani’s contribution extended beyond him, stating that many artists of his generation had benefitted from the producer’s encouragement and backing.

The actor further expressed gratitude, saying that people like Nihalani were instrumental in enabling artists to move from humble beginnings to national recognition. He added that the late producer’s support and mentorship had helped shape the careers of several well-known performers in the industry. Govinda also extended condolences to Nihalani’s family and the wider community associated with him, offering prayers for peace to the departed soul.
He emphasised that his success, like that of many others in the industry, was built on the guidance and opportunities provided by individuals such as the late producer. Pahlaj Nihalani is remembered in the Hindi film industry for producing several popular films, including Shola Aur Shabnam and Aankhen, in addition to introducing and collaborating with actors who went on to achieve major success in Bollywood.
