Zeenat Aman Reveals Lesser-Known Hindu Name And Speaks On Personal Faith
Zeenat Aman reveals Hindu name, says she is non-religious.
Veteran actor Zeenat Aman has revealed a lesser-known aspect of her personal identity, disclosing that she also carries a Hindu name, “Laliteshwari,” while speaking about her upbringing in an interfaith and multicultural family environment. The actor made the remarks at the Amrit Ratna 2026 summit held in New Delhi on Wednesday.
Aman shared that her father’s name for her is Zeenat Aman, while her mother’s side of the family called her Laliteshwari. She explained that her mother, Vardhini, was a deeply religious Hindu woman who followed daily rituals and spent several hours performing puja. The actor noted that she was largely raised under her mother’s influence, which exposed her to Hindu traditions during her childhood.
During the interaction, Aman was asked whether she personally considers herself a religious person. Responding candidly, she said she does not identify as religious, explaining that her life experiences shaped a broader and more inclusive worldview rather than adherence to a single faith tradition. She highlighted her diverse upbringing, noting that her father was Muslim, her mother Hindu, and that she was also educated in a Catholic school.

Additionally, she mentioned that her stepfather was German, emphasizing that she was exposed to multiple cultural and religious influences from an early age. According to her, this multicultural environment played a key role in shaping her beliefs. Aman further said that while she does not follow any specific religion, she respects all faiths equally.
She stated that no religion teaches wrongdoing and emphasized her personal values of humanity, kindness, peace, equality, and compassion toward both people and animals. She described these principles as her own form of “religion.” The actor also reflected on her experiences of observing different belief systems closely within her family and social environment.
She said these experiences influenced her perspective on spirituality and reduced the need to align with any single religious identity. Aman’s remarks at the summit have drawn attention for their candidness, as she revisited her upbringing and identity through the lens of interfaith harmony and cultural diversity. Her comments add to ongoing public discussions around personal faith, identity, and pluralism in contemporary Indian society.
