Was Mahesh Babu Ever Considered For 'Ramayana'? Makers Finally Clarify
Filmmakers dismiss speculation surrounding Mahesh Babu’s reported casting.
The casting of the upcoming film Ramayana has remained a major subject of discussion since the ambitious project was announced. Over the years, several prominent actors, including Telugu superstar Mahesh Babu, were reportedly linked to the role of Lord Rama, leading to considerable speculation among fans.
Producer Namit Malhotra and director Nitesh Tiwari have now addressed the reports and clarified their original casting plans. According to the filmmakers, Ranbir Kapoor was always their preferred choice to portray Lord Rama, and there was no uncertainty regarding the actor they wanted for the central role.
Speaking to Screen Rant, Malhotra said the filmmakers became increasingly enthusiastic about the project after Tiwari and his team completed further work on the screenplay. Once the script had been polished, the creative team had a clearer understanding of the scale, tone and performances required for the film.

Malhotra explained that both he and Tiwari wanted to see Ranbir portraying Lord Rama. He described the actor as the natural choice for the role and indicated that Ranbir would have occupied every position if the filmmakers had prepared a list of their first, second and third preferences.
The clarification effectively dismisses reports suggesting that Mahesh Babu had been the filmmakers’ original choice before Ranbir joined the project. While several leading stars were mentioned in connection with the film during its development, the makers’ comments suggest those claims did not reflect their actual casting decision.
Ramayana has attracted widespread attention because of its subject, scale and prominent cast. With the filmmakers now addressing one of the most persistent casting rumours, their statement confirms that Ranbir’s selection was part of the project’s core creative vision rather than the result of a later change in plans.
