Urmila Matondkar Comments on Rangeela Remake as 4K HD Version Hits Theatres

Urmila Matondkar welcomes Rangeela remake plans, reflecting that the film now belongs to its audience, not just her.

As Ram Gopal Varma’s iconic 1995 blockbuster Rangeela returned to theaters in a sparkling 4K restored version on November 28, 2025, Urmila Matondkar, the film’s beating heart, gave a refreshingly mature take on the idea of a remake.

In a candid chat with Hindustan Times, the actress who shot to superstardom as the fiery, colorful Mili said, “Cinema never belonged to anybody. The minute I did Rangeela and it went on celluloid, that girl on screen stopped being me. She now belongs to every person who has loved the film for the last 30 years.”

When asked directly if she would mind someone remaking the cult classic, Urmila laughed it off with grace: “Each to their own. If anybody wants to do it, why not? The more, the merrier! It’s a little silly and childish to get possessive about roles you played decades ago. Let people remake it; let the audience decide how good or bad it is—it’s absolutely welcome.”

The re-release has already created waves, with packed houses across metros and single-screen theaters, proving that A.R. Rahman’s electrifying soundtrack, Varma’s raw energy, and Urmila’s uninhibited performance still feel as fresh and audacious as they did in 1995. From “Tanha Tanha” playing in PVRs to millennials discovering “Hai Rama” on the big screen for the first time, Rangeela is living its second blockbuster life.

Urmila’s open-hearted stance—“the film doesn’t belong to you anymore”—has won her even more love online, with fans calling it the most classy response an actor can give to the remake question. Thirty years on, Mili’s spirit (and Urmila’s) remains untamed.
