Understanding Met Gala Fashion: Bollywood Stars' Looks Analyzed, Critiqued by Style Experts

Influencer Sufi Motiwala criticizes Shah Rukh Khan's Met Gala necklace as tacky; praises Karan Johar's fashion debut.

Fashion influencer Sufi Motiwala has sparked debate online after criticizing Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s Met Gala appearance, particularly targeting the actor’s jewelry and styling choices. In a recent interview, Sufi described Shah Rukh Khan’s accessories, including a prominent ‘K’ necklace, as “tacky” and suggested the overall look did not fully capture the grandeur expected from one of India’s biggest film stars at the globally celebrated fashion event. His remarks have since generated mixed reactions across social media, with fans and fashion followers divided over the criticism.

Discussing Shah Rukh Khan’s Met Gala debut look, Sufi said the actor’s all-black ensemble represented a missed opportunity considering the event’s theme and fashion potential. According to him, the styling lacked dramatic elements that could have elevated the appearance while still maintaining the actor’s signature preference for darker tones. He suggested additions such as structured shoulders, a cape, or more distinctive tailoring could have helped create a stronger red-carpet impact befitting Shah Rukh Khan’s international stature and celebrity presence.

Sufi was particularly critical of the jewelry used in the look, especially the ‘K’ necklace worn by the actor. He claimed that despite Shah Rukh Khan having access to some of the finest luxury designers and jewelers globally, the accessories appeared comparatively underwhelming. Referring to Mumbai’s well-known Bandra Hill Road shopping market, Sufi remarked that the jewelry looked inexpensive and did not complement the exclusivity associated with the Met Gala. His comments quickly attracted attention online, with some users agreeing with the fashion critique while others defended the actor’s understated styling approach.

The influencer’s comments came during a broader discussion on Indian celebrity appearances at international fashion events. While he criticized Shah Rukh Khan’s styling choices, Sufi strongly praised filmmaker Karan Johar for his Met Gala debut look inspired by artist Raja Ravi Varma. He described Johar’s appearance as “hundred on hundred” and said the filmmaker fully understood the assignment of delivering a bold, fashion-forward statement suitable for the prestigious event. Sufi added that he had long expected Karan Johar to excel at the Met Gala because of his strong understanding of fashion and presentation.

The Met Gala remains one of the most closely watched fashion events globally, often generating intense scrutiny over celebrity outfits, styling choices, and thematic interpretations. Indian celebrities have increasingly drawn global attention at the event in recent years, with actors, filmmakers, and designers using the platform to showcase Indian fashion influences on an international stage. Discussions and critiques surrounding celebrity appearances are common after the event, particularly on social media platforms where fashion commentary and reactions spread rapidly.

Sufi Motiwala himself is currently in the spotlight ahead of his upcoming debut at the Cannes Film Festival, further amplifying interest in his opinions on celebrity fashion. His remarks on Shah Rukh Khan’s Met Gala look have added to ongoing conversations about how Indian stars are represented at major global cultural events and whether they should take greater creative risks on international red carpets. Despite the criticism, Shah Rukh Khan’s appearance continues to remain widely discussed among fans, fashion observers, and entertainment circles across India and abroad.
