UK Prime Minister Starmer’s India Visit to Strengthen AI Collaboration
Starmer’s visit to boost UK-India tech, trade ties.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s imminent two-day visit to India promises to turbocharge collaborations in artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, according to British Indian AI Minister Kanishka Narayan. Set to arrive in Mumbai on October 8 for his first official tour at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Starmer aims to deepen the UK-India partnership, leveraging the robust foundation laid by recent trade and tech agreements.
Narayan, the Bihar-born Labour MP and the first Indian-origin parliamentarian from Wales, told PTI that the visit will drive “significant advances” in shared priorities like AI, connectivity, and online safety. “India and the UK share a relentless pursuit of the future, with an exceptional foundation for collaboration,” he said, highlighting the potential for joint research and democratic adoption of AI to transform industries and public services. The minister emphasized aligning these innovations with the democratic values both nations cherish.
Starmer, accompanied by a 100-strong delegation of CEOs, university leaders, and cultural figures, will join Modi at the Global Fintech Fest in Mumbai to address innovators and policymakers. The leaders will focus on the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), signed in July, and the Technology Security Initiative (TSI), both poised to amplify trade and tech ties. UK government sources say the duo will engage business leaders to boost two-way investments and showcase the partnership’s breadth across sectors.

Bilateral trade, already at £44.1 billion for the year ending March 2025—a 10.1% jump—stands to soar further with CETA’s removal of tariffs on over 90% of UK goods. The ambitious goal is to double trade by 2030, pending UK parliamentary ratification of the deal next year. Narayan underscored the “deep and personal histories” binding the nations, fueling optimism for applied AI research and adoption in firms, alongside enhanced online safety measures.
As Starmer prepares to depart Tuesday, the visit signals a bold step toward a tech-driven future, with India and the UK poised to redefine their strategic alliance. From Mumbai’s fintech stage to high-level talks, the trip aims to cement a partnership that blends innovation, trade, and shared values, setting the stage for a transformative decade.
