Tamannaah Bhatia Compares South Cinema And Bollywood On Gender Representation

Tamannaah Bhatia discusses gender bias in South cinema industry.

Actor Tamannaah Bhatia has reflected on her long career across both Bollywood and South Indian Cinema, highlighting differences in how female actors are perceived in the two industries. Speaking in a recent interview with Forbes India, she said her experience in South Cinema made her aware of a “specific gaze” towards women that she described as less complimentary, while also noting the varying expectations placed on actresses in commercial films.

Tamannaah, who has worked for nearly two decades across multiple film industries, explained that Hindi Cinema often allows actors to choose between performance-heavy roles and more glamorous commercial appearances. She said that in Bollywood, artists who successfully balance both dramatic and entertainment-driven roles, including song-and-dance sequences, tend to achieve sustained mainstream success over time.

Reflecting on her work in South Cinema, the actor said she gradually understood why the industry is often described in a particular way when it comes to portraying women. She referred to it as a “patriarchal sort of vibe” and suggested that female representation in commercial films there can sometimes feel more restrictive compared to other industries. However, she clarified that her comments were based on personal experience and may not reflect the views of all actors working in the region.

She further noted that music and dance remain an integral part of Indian cinema, and that she learned early in her career to embrace the importance of performance-driven glamour. According to her, female actors who manage to successfully combine strong acting roles with commercial appeal often enjoy longer and more versatile careers in the industry.

On the professional front, Tamannaah is currently preparing for the release of her upcoming film Vvan: Force of the Forest. The film, directed by Deepak Mishra and produced by Balaji Telefilms in association with TVF Motion Pictures and 11:11 Productions, also stars Sidharth Malhotra, Maniesh Paul, Sunil Grover, Shweta Tiwari, and Anup Soni in key roles. It is scheduled for a theatrical release on August 26, 2026.

The film is expected to face a box-office clash with other major releases, including Shraddha Kapoor’s Eetha and Yash’s Toxic: A Fairytale for Grown-Ups, setting up a competitive lineup at the cinemas next year.
