Taapsee Pannu Condemns Societal Apathy Following NEET Aspirant’s Tragic Death

Taapsee Pannu says society has normalised student suicides after NEET aspirant’s death in Patna.

Actor Taapsee Pannu expressed deep grief over the recent death of a NEET aspirant in Patna, criticizing how such tragedies have become normalized across India. She highlighted the worrying trend of student suicides being met with indifference, stating that hundreds of similar incidents occur nationwide but receive minimal attention.

The incident involved a girl student who reportedly fell from the fourth floor of a coaching centre near AIIMS Patna and later succumbed to her injuries on January 11. While initial reports raised concerns of sexual assault, police clarified that no sexual or penetrative assault has been medically confirmed, though traces of human sperm were found during forensic examination. A DNA profile is now being prepared to match the evidence with arrested suspects.

Following public outcry, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the probe. Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary confirmed that the state government requested the transfer of the case to the CBI after dissatisfaction with local investigations, reflecting concerns over procedural lapses and accountability.

The tragedy has sparked protests and public demonstrations. The deceased student’s parents joined a protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on February 8, demanding justice. Independent MP Pappu Yadav also visited the bereaved family, condemning the incident and alleging harassment by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) during the investigation.

In response to the case, Patna Police suspended two officers for delayed action and failure to collect timely intelligence. Activists and public figures, including Taapsee, have urged society and authorities to treat such cases with urgency, emphasizing the need for systemic reforms to prevent similar incidents in the future.
