Suneil Anand, Dev Anand's Son And Actor, Dies at 70 in UK

Suneil Anand, actor, filmmaker and the son of legendary Hindi cinema icon Dev Anand and actor Kalpana Kartik, passed away in the United Kingdom on Tuesday at the age of 70, according to a statement issued by his family and niece Gina Narang. His death marks the loss of a member of one of Bollywood's most celebrated film families. The family confirmed the news while requesting privacy as they mourn his passing. Suneil Anand had celebrated his 70th birthday on June 30 this year.

In a statement, Gina Narang expressed gratitude for the support extended to the family during the difficult time. "Our family is grieving the loss of Suneil Anand. We are genuinely appreciative of the outpouring of love, prayers, and support, which gives us comfort. We respectfully ask for privacy as we work through this trying time together," she said. The family has not disclosed the cause of his death or announced details regarding the funeral or memorial arrangements.

Suneil Anand made his acting debut in 1984 with Anand Aur Anand, a film directed by his father, Dev Anand. Although he appeared in several films, including Master, Main Tere Liye and Car Thief, he maintained a relatively low public profile compared to his father, who remains one of the most iconic figures in Indian cinema. Beyond acting, Suneil also played an active role in preserving and promoting the legacy of Navketan Films, the production house founded by the Anand family.

Ahead of Dev Anand's birth centenary in September 2023, Suneil had spoken about dedicating four decades of his life to supporting his father, managing his health, professional commitments and the affairs of Navketan Films. He had also highlighted his efforts in taking the classic film Guide to the Cannes Film Festival in 2008, describing it as a landmark achievement after it became the first Indian classic selected by the festival committee for a special screening.

Reflecting on his father during the centenary celebrations, Suneil described Dev Anand as a humble, knowledgeable and approachable individual despite his immense fame. He said the veteran actor could comfortably engage in conversations with people from all walks of life and credited his humility as one of his defining qualities. Suneil often spoke with admiration about his father's contribution to Indian cinema and his enduring influence on generations of filmmakers and audiences.

As a filmmaker, Suneil Anand had also revealed plans to direct and produce a film dedicated to his father's life and legacy. He had said the project was intended to honour Dev Anand's remarkable journey in Indian cinema and continue the work of Navketan Films. With Suneil Anand's passing, the Indian film industry has lost not only an actor but also a custodian of one of Bollywood's most influential cinematic legacies.
