Sooraj Barjatya’s Next: Ayushmann Khurrana as Prem in Mumbai Family Drama!

Renowned filmmaker Sooraj Barjatya, celebrated for his iconic family dramas, is set to direct his next cinematic venture, a romantic comedy featuring Ayushmann Khurrana and Sharvari Wagh. In an exclusive interview with PTI, Barjatya praised Khurrana as a “dedicated and fine” actor, confirming that the film, set against the vibrant backdrop of Mumbai, will begin shooting in November 2025 and is slated for release in the second half of 2026.

“We’re shooting the film with them in Mumbai, it’s a story set in Mumbai. It’s all about getting the right story and making it look real with the right cast,” Barjatya said, noting that the film will feature a robust ensemble cast, a hallmark of his previous works. The project, under Rajshri Productions, marks the first collaboration between Barjatya and Khurrana, with Sharvari cast as the female lead after a meticulous selection process. Media reports suggest Khurrana will take on the iconic role of Prem, previously portrayed by Salman Khan in Barjatya’s blockbusters like Maine Pyar Kiya (1989), Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994), Hum Saath Saath Hain (1999), and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015).

Barjatya, who has also directed Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon (2003), Vivah (2006), and Uunchai (2022), expressed a familiar nervousness as production approaches. “I’ve had this nervousness before every film, even with Maine Pyar Kiya. As a creator, it’s not about box office numbers but whether you connect with the audience through honest storytelling,” the 61-year-old director shared. He emphasized his commitment to crafting authentic family narratives that resonate universally, stating, “Everyone should feel that the world I’m creating is honest, like it’s their own home. It’s important to make family films.”

The film, described as a funny romantic saga centered on nuclear families, will also feature veteran actor Anupam Kher, marking his ninth collaboration with Barjatya. Khurrana, currently filming Thama with Rashmika Mandanna for a Diwali 2025 release, and Sharvari, set to star in Alpha alongside Alia Bhatt for a Christmas 2025 release, bring fresh energy to this much-anticipated project. With Barjatya’s signature blend of love, humor, and family values, the film promises to continue his legacy of heartfelt storytelling.
