Sonali Bendre Appeals for Compassion as Supreme Court Orders Removal of Stray Dogs from Public Places
Sonali Bendre criticizes Supreme Court order to remove stray dogs from public spaces.
Actress Sonali Bendre has publicly condemned the Supreme Court’s recent order directing the removal of stray dogs from public places such as schools, hospitals, bus stands, and government buildings. Posting on Instagram, Bendre emphasized the vital role stray dogs play in communities as protectors and companions, cautioning against a blanket removal that could harm all street dogs regardless of their nature.
The Supreme Court, in its November 7 directive, instructed all States and Union Territories to relocate stray dogs from institutional areas and public spaces to designated shelters. These animals must first be sterilized and vaccinated following the Animal Birth Control Rules, 2023, and importantly, not released back to the locations from which they were taken. The order aims to address rising concerns about stray dog attacks and rabies, while mandating fencing and regular inspections of vulnerable premises to ensure safety.
Bendre’s heartfelt appeal draws attention to the need for empathy and humane treatment of street dogs, pointing out that many dogs provide companionship and protection with no expectation of reward. Her intervention has fueled nationwide debate, with some supporting the Court’s stand as necessary for public safety and others, like Bendre, advocating for coexistence approaches that respect animal welfare alongside human concerns.

The controversy highlights the complex challenge faced by authorities balancing public health, safety, and ethical treatment of animals. While the Supreme Court’s measures address serious issues of dog bites and rabies, stakeholders urge the implementation of policies that integrate compassion with effective sheltering and population control.
Sonali Bendre’s voice resonates with animal lovers nationwide, calling for policies that protect communities without overlooking the intrinsic value and loyalty of stray dogs, underscoring that humane coexistence should guide these efforts in India’s urban and rural settings.
