Shah Rukh Khan-Kajol ‘DDLJ’ Statue to Be Unveiled at London’s Leicester Square
The statue will become part of the ‘Scenes in the Square’ movie trail, which celebrates iconic moments from cinematic history.
In a first for Indian cinema, a bronze statue of Bollywood icons Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, immortalising their iconic pose from the 1995 blockbuster ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ (DDLJ), will be installed at Leicester Square in London.
Announced by the Heart of London Business Alliance, the statue will become part of the ‘Scenes in the Square’ movie trail, which celebrates iconic moments from cinematic history. The DDLJ statue is set to be unveiled this spring, months ahead of the film’s 30th anniversary on October 20, 2025.
The romantic drama marked Aditya Chopra’s directorial debut and was produced by Yash Chopra under the Yash Raj Films banner. Shot extensively across the UK, including locations like Hyde Park, Tower Bridge, and King’s Cross Station, the film notably features a scene around Leicester Square where lead characters Raj and Simran first cross paths.
The new statue will be placed outside the Odeon cinema on Leicester Square’s eastern terrace, commemorating the film’s strong connection to the city.
Mark Williams, Deputy Chief Executive of the Heart of London Business Alliance, said, “DDLJ is one of the most successful and important Bollywood films of all time… The statue is a fitting tribute to the global popularity of Bollywood and a celebration of London’s rich diversity.”
Akshaye Widhani, CEO of Yash Raj Films, called the recognition a proud moment. “We’re thrilled to be the first Indian film represented in ‘Scenes in the Square’… This statue will be a great way to express the international appeal of Indian movies and build bridges amongst communities through cinema.”
Meanwhile, DDLJ continues to influence global pop culture, with a musical adaptation, ‘Come Fall in Love – The DDLJ Musical’, set to premiere in Manchester on May 29.
