Saif Ali Khan Calls Agent Vinod A “Vanity Project,” Reflects On Why It Failed To Sustain
Saif Ali Khan reflects on Agent Vinod, calling it a vanity-driven project that failed to sustain.
Actor Saif Ali Khan has reflected on the mixed reception of his 2012 spy thriller Agent Vinod, describing the project as a “vanity” driven decision that may not have fully worked as intended. Speaking in a recent conversation with Variety India, the actor admitted that while the film had a strong opening, it failed to maintain momentum due to structural issues in its execution.
Saif explained that the concept of Agent Vinod was ambitious and ahead of its time, but acknowledged that the final product may have suffered from creative excess. He noted that the film “opened really well,” but did not sustain audience interest, suggesting that it “went off track in many ways” and lacked the tight narrative needed for a spy thriller to succeed.
The actor also conceded that enthusiasm played a role in shaping the project. He said the film was something he made for himself, calling it an expression of personal excitement and creative ambition. However, he added that this personal investment may have contributed to a lack of restraint in the storytelling, ultimately affecting its overall impact.

His remarks come shortly after co-star Lalit Parimoo revisited the film’s production, alleging that excessive involvement from lead actors Kareena Kapoor Khan and Saif affected the director’s vision. Parimoo claimed that director Sriram Raghavan faced creative interference, which he believes contributed to the film’s uneven execution.
Despite the criticism, Saif defended the project’s intent, saying the idea, title, and genre positioning were all strong and “cool for its time.” He suggested that while mistakes were made during production, the failure should not be reduced solely to vanity, but rather seen as a combination of creative experimentation and missteps in execution.
Directed by Sriram Raghavan, Agent Vinod featured Saif Ali Khan as a RAW operative and Kareena Kapoor Khan as a fellow intelligence officer. Produced under Saif’s own banner, the film was mounted on a large budget and shot across multiple international and domestic locations. Though it generated initial box office interest, it ultimately underperformed, later becoming a reference point in discussions about star-driven creative control in Bollywood productions.
