Rs 15 Crore of Legs?: ‘Partner’ Writer Reveals Salman Khan Was Paid Double Govinda’s Fee

Bollywood’s 2007 comedy hit ‘Partner’ is fondly remembered for the crackling chemistry between Salman Khan and Govinda. Now, nearly two decades later, the film’s writer Alok Upadhyay has spilled some behind-the-scenes details—including the actors’ massive paycheques.

In a recent chat with YouTube channel Lightscameramasti, Upadhyay recalled a memorable moment during the shoot of the popular song “Soni De Nakhre”. He revealed that Salman Khan and Govinda were collectively paid Rs 15 crore for the film, with Salman reportedly charging Rs 10 crore—Rs 5 crore more than Govinda.

“During the shoot, the choreographer was taking wide shots. Director David Dhawan, seated beside me, said, ‘One actor is getting Rs 10 crore, the other Rs 5 crore—and all we’re showing is their legs? What’s the point?’” Upadhyay recounted.

Dhawan, visibly irked by the lack of close-ups on the stars, reportedly told the choreographer, “This Rs 50 flowerpot, Rs 300 broom, and your fancy decorations won’t sell the film. Those two actors cost Rs 15 crore—get a close-up of them!”

Partner, directed by David Dhawan and produced by Sohail Khan and Parag Sanghvi, was inspired by the 2005 Hollywood film Hitch. The romantic comedy starred Salman Khan as love guru Prem and Govinda as his bumbling client Bhaskar. The film also featured Katrina Kaif and Lara Dutta.

With its witty dialogues and comic timing, especially by Govinda, the film was a massive box office success, grossing Rs 99.66 crore worldwide. It remains a fan favourite, thanks in part to its iconic scenes and songs like “Soni De Nakhre”—and, as it turns out, its high-priced lead duo.
