Dhurandhar The Revenge crosses 50 million views despite backlash

Actor Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar The Revenge has emerged as a major streaming success, crossing 50 million viewers during its opening weekend on JioHotstar despite attracting criticism over its unconventional live-streaming release format. The spy drama generated significant online discussion following its debut, with many viewers expressing dissatisfaction with the decision to present the film as a live-streaming event rather than through a traditional on-demand release. Social media platforms saw a mix of reactions, with some users questioning the viewing experience while others praised the experiment as an innovative step in digital entertainment.

Despite the backlash, audience interest remained strong. According to a statement issued by the streaming platform, Dhurandhar The Revenge recorded more than 50 million viewers within its first weekend of release. The film was made available in multiple languages, including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada, allowing it to reach audiences across different regions of the country. The platform also revealed that around 60 per cent of the film’s total watch time came from connected television devices. The figure suggests that a large number of viewers chose to watch the film on bigger screens rather than mobile devices, indicating strong co-viewing trends among families and groups. Industry observers often view such viewing patterns as a sign of premium content attracting shared household consumption.

Commenting on the film’s performance, Alok Jain, Head of Hindi and English Entertainment Business for Streaming, Television and Studios at JioStar, described the response as “extraordinary.” He said the high percentage of viewership through connected TVs reflected a growing preference for large-screen entertainment experiences within Indian households, even in the streaming era. Jain added that the success of Dhurandhar The Revenge, along with its associated “RAW & Undekha” experience, demonstrated increasing audience interest in immersive and event-driven content.

According to him, the strong numbers indicate that viewers are becoming more receptive to new storytelling formats and release strategies that blur the lines between traditional broadcasting and streaming. The film’s performance is particularly noteworthy because it managed to convert widespread online discussion into viewership. While criticism of the live-streaming format dominated early conversations around the release, the audience figures suggest that curiosity and interest in the project ultimately outweighed negative sentiment. For Ranveer Singh, the success represents another high-profile addition to his filmography and reinforces his appeal across digital platforms.

The strong opening-weekend numbers also highlight the growing importance of streaming services in shaping the commercial success of major Indian film releases. As platforms continue experimenting with release models to attract viewers in an increasingly competitive market, Dhurandhar The Revenge may be viewed as a case study in how unconventional distribution strategies can generate both controversy and substantial audience engagement. Its opening-weekend performance suggests that while viewers may debate the format, compelling content can still drive large-scale viewership.
