Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar Re-Released with Muted Dialogues, Filmmakers Cite Sensitivity

Dhurandhar re-released after controversial words silenced.

Aditya Dhar's spy thriller Dhurandhar, starring Ranveer Singh, has been re-released in theatres with a revised version featuring muted dialogues, including references to 'Baloch' and 'intelligence'. Following its phenomenal box office performance—crossing ₹1140 crore worldwide since its December 5, 2025 release—the production house B62 Studios initiated these alterations independently. Officials from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting have explicitly denied any directive compelling the changes, emphasizing that the decision rested solely with the filmmakers.

The modifications were submitted to the Central Board of Film Certification under Rule 31 of the Cinematograph Act, permitting post-certification edits that preserve the scene's core intent without altering its broader narrative. Producers cited concerns that certain terms were perceived as offensive to specific communities, prompting the voluntary muting to address potential sensitivities. This development emerged weeks into the film's extended theatrical run, transforming screenings from January 1, 2026 onward.

In the narrative, Akshaye Khanna portrays Rehman Dakait, a powerful figure leading a gang associated with Pakistan's Baloch region, while R Madhavan essays the role of Intelligence Bureau Director Ajay Sanyal. Ranveer Singh's central character, an undercover operative, infiltrates this network on Sanyal's orders, drawing from real-life events such as the IC-814 hijacking and the 26/11 attacks. These elements form pivotal plot threads, exploring underworld dynamics and geopolitical tensions, which underscores the significance of the altered references.

The ensemble cast, including Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Rampal, and Sara Arjun, contributes to the film's gripping portrayal of espionage and high-stakes confrontation. Dhurandhar's success has positioned it as one of Hindi cinema's top earners, with robust collections in India and internationally. Reports vary on the exact trigger for changes, ranging from community objections to precautionary measures, yet the producers maintain the revisions were proactive and self-initiated.

As the first part of a planned two-part series, Dhurandhar continues to dominate screens in its updated form, with the sequel scheduled for release on March 19, 2026. This episode highlights ongoing discussions around cinematic representation, cultural sensitivities, and the balance between artistic expression and audience reception in contemporary Indian filmmaking.
