Bollywood icon Rani Mukerji was overcome with emotion as she celebrated her first National Film Award win for Best Actress at the 71st National Film Awards ceremony on Tuesday. Honored for her powerful performance in Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway, Mukerji dedicated the prestigious accolade to her late father, Ram Mukherjee, and expressed gratitude to her fans, family, and the film’s team for their unwavering support during her 30-year career.

Receiving the award from President Droupadi Murmu, the 47-year-old actor described the moment as deeply personal. “This is my first National Award in a three-decade journey, and it means the world to me. I dedicate this honor to my father, whose blessings I feel today, and to my mother, whose strength has always guided me,” Mukerji said in a heartfelt statement.

She reflected on the significance of the role, which resonated with her as a mother, portraying Debika Chatterjee, an Indian immigrant in Norway fighting a harrowing battle against authorities to regain custody of her children.

Directed by Ashima Chibber and released in March 2023, Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway struck a chord with audiences for its raw depiction of maternal resilience. Mukerji called the film “a tribute to mothers worldwide,” emphasizing its portrayal of the unyielding spirit of women facing unimaginable odds. “As a mother, this role was profoundly personal. We aimed to honor the quiet, powerful strength of women and motherhood through this story,” she added.
